Kimberlee and 17’s exchange and her taking a beatdown during the heat segment were highlights of the match. I also enjoyed them playing up the fact that Jigsaw and Roger are brothers without being too overt. This was a great re-debut for Knight Eye and a nice way to rehab the GEKIDO who seemingly have lost some steam. ***

After the match Roger tells Jigsaw that he’s not his brother. 17 and Shard left earlier, so Jigsaw is left alone in the corner dejected.

King of Trios 2014 First Round Match

Kingston hits the Backfist to the Future. Jacobs gets the cover for the pin at 10:00. The ending was expected, but also successful in making The Flood look lucky to have won and keeping the Envoy strong. The action was fine but the middle portion was somewhat meandering. **½

Team Old Fashioned is in the back. Jervis Cottonbelly says he’s wanted to bring a lady into the fold for quite some time. Fontaine agrees, which is why they recruited the first lady of Gentlemania, Thunderkitty, for their team. Cottonbelly thinks she could use some finishing lessons. She chops up Rumblecrunch too. She charges both of them in opposite corners. McMassive accidentally boots Rumblecrunch. Thunderkitty gives McMassive some shots to the chest and clotheslines him to the floor. She headbutts Smashmaster and gives him a bodyslam! She drops an elbow. Rumblecrunch picks her up and gives her a fallaway slam. Cottonbelly puts him in a crucifix. Fontaine dropkicks Rumblecrunch to assist Cottonbelly with a crucifix pin. He kicks out at two. McMassive whips Cottonbelly so hard to the corner that he hits the floor. The Death Blow connects on Fontaine (after Smashmaster slips on a first attempt) giving the Corporation the win at 9:36. The build up to Thunderkitty getting her chance to shine was well done, as was allowing the Corporation to look like a formidable team. This was fun, though that finish was a little dicey for a moment. **¾

Ares gets in Cube’s face. Meanwhile, Matthews and Peck drag Nøkken to the floor. Ares notices Jagged charging. He moves and Jagged knocks Cube down. Ares tries a roll-up. Jagged counters with an Oklahoma Roll for the pin at 7:11. Short but sweet. The action was continuous and they got the idea that there were issues with Cube and Ares across very well. **¼

Ares argues with Cube. Cube slaps Ares in the face! Ares goes to throw a punch but Nøkken blocks it. He drops Ares with a sit-out reverse piledriver! Cube takes off his head – it’s Jakob Hammermeier! He says the last time we saw Jakob he was suffering after multiple disappointments. He says all the disappointments began with Ares who always overlooked him. He calls Ares the real disappointment and says that Jakob now has taken control of the BDK. Jakob reveals he made a deal with some devils to get the Eye of Tyr (which to remind you, was originally in control by Ares’ father). Hatfield and Angelosetti drop Guerrero with the 3D for the pin at 19:57. These teams had a fun dynamic, though I feel like Hernandez got the short end of the stick when it comes to time in the ring. The crowd was really into the Golden Trio which helped the flow. It could have been truncated and been a more tight package, but this was still solid stuff. ***

Chavo gets on the microphone. He says it’s a breath of fresh air to see that indie wrestling is still alive. He says the Golden Trio kicked butt tonight and calls them future stars.

CHIKARA students and rookies Kid Cyclone, Equinox III & Create-A-Wrestler II make their way to the ring. Cyclone introduces themselves to the crowd as the Greenhorn Militia. He asks the fans who remembers the Latvian Proud Oak, misses the Estonian Thunderfrog, and still loves Kobald. The fans cheer for each name. Cyclone wants to know why in Revere, MA when the Thunderfrog was left laying his mentors went and sold t-shirts. He wants to know why their champions are out here trying to win more gold. He says that’s fine, as the GHM is here to do the dirty work. With that, he calls out Deucalion. He gets the fans to chant “coward.” Out comes their trainer and mentor Hallowicked who tells them to leave. Cyclone tells the crowd he proved to everyone that Deucalion is a coward as he leaves.

When he avoids some offense and is about to tag out, Missile pulls Silver Ant off of the apron so he and his teammates can continue to wear down Fire Ant. Fire Ant manages to stack up all three Xtreme Force members in the corner. Silver Ant comes in with a dropkick to Missile. He gives Arctic a Michinoku Driver. Missile breaks the pin. Arctic rips off a turnbuckle pad while Orbit rips off another. Missile goes to launch Fire Ant into the exposed turnbuckle but he slides off. Worker Ant limps his way back out! He tosses Orbit and Arctic off the apron. Missile shoves Bryce Remsburg into Worker Ant. Worker Ant backdrops him to avoid a powerbomb. He goes for the GTS when Arctic cracks his snowboard over Worker Ant’s head! He still manages to kick out of Missile’s pin anyhow. Worker Ant trips Missile into one of the exposed turnbuckles. The GTS would do it but Orbit pulls Bryce out of the ring. As Orbit and Arctic are arguing with Bryce, the Colon launch Fire Ant onto them with the Antapult. Missile falls victim to the Ant Hill, giving the Colony the win at 17:22. This was the best match of the night in terms of in ring action and storytelling. Worker Ant’s injury was not only good storytelling for this match, but carries over into the next round (at least) as well. The Colony: Xtreme Force did a tremendous job playing up their villainous ways, and the callbacks to their first match with the exposed turnbuckles was a nice touch. A fitting way to end the first night. ***¼

One Response to King of Trios 2014, Night I

  1. Why have that load of garbage Sean Waltman on commentary? He’s unlistenable and no one with any brains actually likes him. He’s the Trope Namer for X-Pac Heat, after all. Why couldn’t Deucalion just destroy him and leave the Greenhorn Militia alone?
