Northern Outlaw Wrestling: The Vegas 8 Tournament

Minot, ND – 9.23-9.24.2011

Both of these matches are on a “Best of Vegas 8” tournament DVD released by Northern Outlaw Wrestling. I for the life of me cannot find results anywhere, and Mike Quackenbush’s first round match is not on this DVD. I wish I could tell you who he faced, but alas, it’s not in the cards this time. We do however get these two matches:

Vegas 8 Tournament: Second Round
Mike Quackenbush vs. Darin Corbin

Quack twists out of Corbin’s wristlock and flips him to the mat. The fans are making fun of Corbin’s multicolored tights by chanting “Rainbow Brite”. Corbin wants a test of strength. Quackenbush instead wraps his legs around one of Corbin’s. He trips Corbin while keeping his legs tight. Corbin stands up only to be tripped back down. Corbin demands to be released from the hold, and Quackenbush does so. Corbin tries to same leg vice insisting Quackenbush could never escape it. Quackenbush of course walks right out of it. Corbin slaps Quackenbush when he takes a lock-up to the corner. Quackenbush sits down to block an Irish whip. He backdrops Corbin and chops him in the corner. An atomic drop sends Corbin to the floor. Quackenbush slaps Corbin’s buttocks on the floor. Corbin catches him with a forearm to the back inside the ring. Quackenbush rolls out a whip. He stomps on Corbin’s foot, sweeps the legs and drops his knees on his chest for a two count. Corbin flips out of the Black Tornado Slam and rolls up Quackenbush for two. Corbin delivers a chinbreaker and a clothesline. Quackenbush fights out of a head vice by turning it into a chinlock. Quackenbush uses his legs and hand to bait his way out of the chinlock and into a wristlock. Corbin knees Quackenbush in the stomach to break it. He chokes Quackenbush until he grabs the ropes and then chokes him on the middle rope. Corbin puts on a chinlock again. Quackenbush fights out of it. Corbin rolls up Quackenbush but gets kicked in the head. Quackenbush rolls him up for two. Corbin clotheslines Quackenbush in the mid-section. Corbin misses a top rope legdrop and rubs his buttocks on the bottom rope to try and alleviate the pain (I guess?). Quackenbush delivers ten punches in the corner. He successfully hits the Black Tornado Slam and rolls into a crucifix for two. Arik Cannon is hiding ringside. Corbin rakes Quackenbush’s eyes as he goes to the top rope. Quackenbush headbutts him to the mat and hits a Swanton bomb. Cannon gets on the apron and blasts Quackenbush with a haymaker. Corbin then hits a low Ace Crusher to pick up the pin at 15:45. There wasn’t too much to see here in the first place but the finish took the wind out of my sails. It built to the following night which is fine, but after investing sixteen minutes in an already average match it did nothing to lift my spirits personally. **1/4

Mike Quackenbush vs. Arik Cannon

Quackenbush and Cannon trade holds to start. Quackenbush twists Cannon’s arm and fingers something fierce. Quackenbush spreads apart Cannon’s leg until he falls in a seated position. Quackenbush and Cannon have opposite reactions fromtheir interactions with the fans. Quackenbush of course received the cheers. Quackenbush trips Cannon into a single leg hold. Cannon grabs the ropes to escape. Quackenbush controls Cannon by his arms, taking him to the mat twice. He sends Cannon out with a toreador and fakes a dive. Quackenbush kicks him from the apron. Back in the ring Cannon punches Quackenbush in the mid-section. Quackenbush backdrops Cannon to the floor and moonsaults out onto him. Cannon snaps Quackenbush’s neck across the top rope. Cannon throws some forearms to his back and neck. Cannon bites his ear because he’s a jerk. It only gets him a two count. Quackenbush tries to bait Cannon into releasing his chinlock. He saw Quackenbush do the same trick yesterday so he doesn’t fall for it. He does however position himself to have his leg trapped and for Quack to escape. Cannon kicks him in the side of the head. He delivers a neck snap afterwards. Cannon dropkicks him in the neck and chokes him on the mat. Quackenbush escapes a chinlock. He rolls Cannon into a cradle for two. Cannon ducks a clothesline and delivers a neckbreaker. Cannon back elbows Quackenbush as he comes off the ropes. Quackenbush evades Cannon’s second rope moonsault. Quackenbush back elbows and low dropkicks Cannon. Cannon blocks the Quackendriver III. Cannon delivers a hard right punch and the Total Anarchy for two. Quackenbush backslides Cannon for two. A palm strike leads to the Black Tornado Slam for a two count. Cannon dropkicks Quackenbush’s leg out from the top rope. Cannon connects with the Glimmering Warlock for the pin at 16:47. This was probably the most basic stuff you will ever see these two do. To their credit, they kept it entertaining regardless of it not being as flashy as you might expect and were able to build off the Corbin match from the night before. It’s nothing worth going out of your way to see but solid wrestling nonetheless. **3/4
