Cannon tags Drago with three haymakers and a jumping back elbow. He clotheslines Drago into a bulldog. A second rope elbow gets him two. Drago fights off a Saito suplex and enzugiri’s Cannon to the floor. Cruz and Corbin give Drago the Shellshock. They knock Aries and Kozina to the floor. Corbin dives onto Drago and Cannon. Aries cuts off Cruz’s dive with a clothesline. He hits the IED. Kozina springboards in with a bulldog. Corbin knocks Kozina and Aries off the top rope as they look to bring down Cruz. Cannon Saito suplexes Drago for two. Cruz Control gets the F1RST Family the pin at 11:43. This was a really fun and action packed match. Everyone worked hard and the crowd really got into the action. Aside from a couple slip ups, this was executed well and brought up the energy to get the show going on the right track. ***

Generico jumps in to break both pins. Egipcio is dropkicked to the floor by his partners. Generico avoids Ophidian’s corner attack and yakuza kicks Amasis. Amasis avoids a brainbuster. He rolls up Ophidian into a reverse prawn hold for the pin at 16:29. A little long but really fun. This was the Bucks debut on the East Coast and CHIKARA and they made a fantastic impression to a new crop of fans right off the bat. Their style mixed in really well with the Portal and they had some convincing near falls to keep the drama high. It’s a shame Generico and the Bucks didn’t go further as a team, but they would keep their momentum going tomorrow anyhow. ***¼

The Roughnecks are standing by. Eddie Kingston reminds us that he made it to the finals of King of Trios last year. Kingston doesn’t like remembering that he lost in the finals and Lee doesn’t like to remember that he lost in the first round with one of his friends and a random partner. When it comes to this year’s tournament, Kingston’s going to beat them up, Redwood’s going to chop them down, and Lee will run over whatever is left.

King of Trios 2009 First Round Match
Claudio Castagnoli, Bryan Danielson & Dave Taylor vs. Eddie Kingston {R}, Brodie Lee {R} & Grizzly Redwood {R}

Danielson feigns Redwood taking control, then easily puts on a wristlock. Claudio and Taylor grab a wristlock themselves. Taylor puts on a straightjacket choke. Redwood backs off before Danielson can deliver an uppercut. Kingston is angry with Redwood, but steps in the ring with Danielson anyhow. Kingston runs the ropes, presumably for a shoulder tackle. Taylor and Claudio cut him off. All three members of Team Uppercut uppercut Kingston multiple time. Lee shoves Danielson to the mat out of a lock-up. Danielson knees him in the stomach as he comes off the ropes. He succombs to uppercuts from all of his opponents. Taylor clobbers his chest in the corner. Claudio nails a running uppercut. Danielson and Taylor double hip toss Claudio as he comes in. The Roughnecks try a sneak attack but all eat uppercuts. Danielson and Claudio double slam Kingston. Taylor teases a top rope move but his partners encourage him to second guess it. Lee and Redwood are sent to the floor. Kingston rolls out after taking a couple uppercuts. Lee traps Danielson so Redwood can chop block him. The Roughnecks take turn working over Danielson’s left leg. Danielson escapes their grasp by avoiding a corner attack from Lee and taking him down with a running right legged kick to the chest. Taylor uppercuts all of the Roughnecks. Claudio gives Redwood Swiss Chin Music. He Giant Swings Redwood as the crowd counts to 100. Lee and Kingston are held off by Danielson and Taylor respectively. Danielson then puts Redwood in the Cattle Mutilation. Redwood taps out at 20:38. You could tell both teams were having a blast and that fun transmitted through the screen. Admittedly they didn’t do much outside of uppercuts and Danielson’s leg being worked over, but that leg work would prove to be important for the rest of the weekend, and they made it matter here. **¾

Da Soul Touchaz and C-Red introduce themselves. Acid Jaz is injured, so Trauma, who debuted in the Midwest is with them instead. C-Red says this year they’re about business and are going home as the King of Trios.

He drops the bomb with a top rope legdrop for the pin at 14:56. The comedy was top notch, as was the wrestling. Sanchez especially got a chance to shine. This match really embodied the CHIKARA spirit, which is funny considering none of these guys were regulars in any capacity at the time. Possibly the most underrated match of the tournament. ***

This didn’t really have much of a story holding everything together. It was mostly a series of moves and an ending. It also went on too long and the crowd became restless. A weird match, but there was still some good action. **½

Quackenbush sends Skayde to the floor onto Hallowicked and tope con hilo’s onto Frightmare. Saint tricks Delirious into a pin with the Lady of the Lake. He baits Delirious into a schoolboy for the pin at 21:45. Although it was a little long (a trend?) I enjoyed the counter wrestling and Lucha influenced combat we got. Seeing Delirious in the ring with Saint is surreal, but it worked! ***

Al Snow and Glacier and backstage. Glacier says he made it to the finals last year (????), but this year, they’re down a partner with Iceberg unable to make it. Snow says it doesn’t matter, he says their opponents should pack up and head home. Between the two of them and their experience, there’s not much they can do to surprise them. Snow says they always have a plan. Glacier is on board with a two on three bout.

Luckily for Snow and Glacier, they would get a new partner drawn from a hat (as is tradition). While the colorful Amazing Red and Green Ant aren’t here, D’Lo Brown is and the crowd is excited to see him. He will fill in for Iceberg.

STIGMA breaks the pin. Glacier kicks him to the floor. Brown gives Gerard the Rydeen Bomb. Delaney backslides Brown for the pin at 26:22. Why on Earth this went so long I have no idea. There was a whole lot of nothing going on for awhile and most of the action was meaningless. In retrospect, this should not have been the main event and gone a third of it’s length for a much more satisfactory package. *½

Glacier superkicks STIGMA. Snow knocks down Gerard with Head. Brown pops up Delaney into an Ace Crusher, then hits him with a frog splash. Snow hits Gerard with head again. I guess we get a happy ending to the evening after all.
