King of Trios 2008 First Round Match
KUDO {DDT}, MIYAWAKI {KD} & SUSUMU vs. Reno Diamond, Marcus O’Neal & Marcus Reed

Referee finds a lot of gimmicks on the Southern Saints when patting them down. SUSUMU trades wristlocks with Reed. SUSUMU hits a dropkick. They duck each others kicks then tag out to MIYAWAKI and Diamond, respectively. Diamond ends up hitting a spin kick to the face. MIYAWAKI twists up his ankle but Diamond grabs him by the hair and slams him into the top turnbuckle. Reed gets in some jabs and an eye poke. Diamond holds MIYAWAKI in a Camel Clutch so O’Neal can hit a basement dropkick. MIYAWAKI hits O’Neal with a knee to the stomach. KUDO and O’Neal trade chops. KUDO knocks him down with a kick to the chest. O’Neal blocks another kick but takes an enzuigiri. SUSUMU snapmares him into a face rake and two legdrops. SUSUMU and MIYAWAKI hit him with the Sidewinder for two. MIYAWAKI drops a fist. KUDO swiftly kicks O’Neal in the back. O’Neal catches him with a Cobra Clutch backbreaker and a clothesline STO. He gives KUDO a receipt with his own kick to the back. He sends KUDO to the floor with a second rope Frankensteiner and follows with a tope con hilo. Diamond and Reed trade fists with KUDO and SUSUMU. All three Saints deliver punches to Team Japan in the corners. After some showboating, KUDO and MIYAWAKI clothesline Reed and Diamond in the corners. SUSUMU release suplexes O’Neal. He gives him a lungblower. KUDO comes off the top with double knees for two. SUSUMU hits O’Neal with a missile dropkick. He gives him a Death Valley Driver while the other four fight outside the ring. SUSUMU gives O’Neal a twisting Yoshi Tonic for the pin at 10:26. There were some ugly moments in this match. Nobody told a story, just tags and moves until a finish. Not the best utilization of MIYAWAKI and KUDO. *½

C-Red let’s Da Soul Touchaz introduce themselves. “Mr. M-80” Marshe Rockett is hyped to go through 27 other teams. “The Urban American Dream” Willie Richardson is also excited. “Hot Chocolate” Acid Jaz is ready to show everyone that they’re the elite group, even if the rest of the world doesn’t know it yet. C-Red takes us out with the Da Soul Touchaz rally cry. They can’t decide which direction to go off camera but eventually settle for their right.

King of Trios 2008 First Round Match
Marshe Rockett {ST}, Acid Jaz {ST} & Willie Richardson {ST} vs. Kobra Kai {BSE}, Super Xtremo {BSE} & La Sombra {BSE}

It’s obvious from the start that Kai is on a different page than Sombra and Xtremo. Rockett and Sombra trade waistlocks. Rockett rolls up Sombra for two. Sombra denies Kai’s plea to cheat. Rockett arm whips Sombra into a dropkick. Richardson and Xtremo tag in. Xtremo holds onto a side headlock. Richardson escapes and knocks him down with a running shoulder block. Kai blind tags in when Xtremo hits the ropes. Richardson lights up Kai with punches and gets two with a suplex. He comes off the second rope with an elbow drop. Xtremo hops back in as Jaz tags in. They each snap off an armdrag and go for a quick pin. Jaz throws a couple kicks but gets taken down with a leg lariat. Sombra helps Xtremo hit a 619, then delivers his own German suplex for two. Jaz finds himself trapped in the BSE corner. Jaz catches Sombra with a DDT onto his knee and an enzuigiri. Richardson unloads punches on Kai. He hits a leaping back elbow and a dropkick for two. Kai gets slammed onto his posterior. Xtremo headscissors Richardson to the floor. Rockett attacks Xtremo from behind. Xtremo ducks a clothesline and suicide dives onto Richardson. Rockett leaps up and kicks Sombra for two. Sombra responds with a Busaiku Knee. Jaz leg drops Sombra twice before breakdancing into a fist drop for two. Sombra blocks a Shiranui. Xtremo comes in with a corkscrew crossbody. All three BSE teammates work together but can’t get a pinfall on Jaz. Xtremo stops Kai from punching referee Derek Sabato, so he punches Xtremo and bails on his team. Rockett pops up Sombra into a Complete Shot from Jaz. Richardson “Drops Da Bomb” with a top rope leg drop for the pin at 13:31. The crowd absolutely fell in love with Da Soul Touchaz, especially Richardson whose high flying capability wowed the audience given that it was unexpected due to his larger figure. The strange bedfellows story with BSE added some freshness to the tournament and really helped DST look great. BSE did okay but had some awkward moments. **¾

Tank Toland, Sara Del Rey, and Bobby Dempsey are representing Sweet N’ Sour Inc. from Ring of Honor. Toland and Sara have Dempsey doing some squats. Toland calls himself a superior athlete, Sara Del Rey a SHIMMER champion, and Dempsey…well, he’s Dempsey. On top of being good looking and athletic, they’re winners. Sara notices Toland’s disgust with Dempsey and tries convincing Toland he’s worth being on the team. Toland seems reluctant but Sara thinks Dempsey will prove him wrong.

King of Trios 2008 First Round Match
Sara Del Rey, Tank Toland & Bobby Dempsey {ROH} vs. Icarus {F}, Gran Akuma {F} & Chuck Taylor {F}

“Isn’t Bobby a trio by himself?” How rude, Akuma. Toland tosses Icarus out of a lock-up. Toland easily blocks an armdrag and airplane spins Icarus into a slam. He stomps Icarus while doing jumping jacks and drops an elbow for two. Icarus tries a waistlock. Toland puts him in a waitlock with his legs, doing sit-ups while elbowing Icarus in the head. He Kiwi rolls Icarus into a Gedo Clutch. Icarus dizzily rolls out of the ring. Dempsey and Taylor tag in. Taylor’s running shoulder blocks do nothing to Dempsey’s large frame. Taylor ends up scaring Dempsey to the corner. Sara and Akuma tag in. Sara snapmares him into a back kick! Sara throws some forearms and boots Akuma in the chest twice. Akuma rolls to the floor when Sara whips him to the ropes. Icarus back chops Sara from behind. He and Taylor double suplex her, leading to F.I.S.T. isolating Sara from the rest of her team. Taylor foolishly throws her to the floor, bringing in Dempsey. He throws punches to Taylor’s mid-section and dropkicks Taylor. Knowing his cannonball senton was coming, Akuma and Taylor jump Dempsey and have him replace Sara in their isolation plan. Dempsey fires up from Akuma’s fallaway kick. He gives him some clotheslines and an arm-capture belly-to-belly suplex before tagging in Toland. He gorilla presses Akuma into a spinebuster. Taylor pitches Toland out. Sara axe kicks Taylor for two. Sara tries a superplex. Icarus brings Sara down with a back cracker for two. He sets up for the Pedigree. Dempsey knocks down Icarus to stop him, as well as Taylor and Akuma while he’s at it. Winded, Dempsey becomes easy bait for Icarus to hit with the Pedigree for the win at 11:47 for the win. That finish was a little weak given that Dempsey basically walked right into the Pedigree but I really enjoyed the action before this. Toland did an awesome job playing right into CHIKARA’s culture, mixing work-out related offense into his arsenal. Sweet N’ Sour Inc. was unquestionably my favorite thing in ROH at this time and I loved seeing them mix it up with one of CHIKARA’s top trios. Finish aside this was a lot of fun to watch. ***

The Fabulous Three are in the back. Mitch Ryder says tonight is a big opportunity for Shayne Hawke They chose Hawke out of every other wrestler because they believe in him and know he’ll “show up” when the bell rings. Hawke promises them that he is ready for the opportunity. Sweeney comes prepared for the biggest tournament in professional wrestling. The Fabulous Three were robbed last year, but this time it’s on Hawke’s shoulders to help lead them to victory. Ryder hopes their opponents are ready because they’re coming to get them.

King of Trios 2008 First Round Match
Tim Donst, Drew Gulak {CZW} & Andy Sumner {CZW} vs. Larry Sweeney {FT}, Mitch Ryder {FT} & Shayne Hawke {FT}

He rolls Ryder into an amateur cradle for two. Ryder knocks Donst down with a back elbow. He misses an elbow drop. Donst reapplies the side headlock on the mat but Ryder grabs the ropes. He also claims Donst pulled his tights. Ryder elbows out of a waistlock. Donst tornado clutches him for two. He tags in Gulak who takes over Donst’s wristlock. Gulak reverses a hip toss into one of his own. He armdrags Ryder and delivers a dropkick. Ryder retreats to Sweeney. Sweeney stomps on Gulak’s foot. Gulak drop toe holds Sweeney and throws some slaps to the face. He ties up Sweeney in a cradle and tries a small package for two. Gulak ducks a clothesline and bridges Sweeney from a Boston Crab into another pin attempt. Hawke and Sumner tag in. Sumner goes for his signature armbar after some strikes. Sweeney jumps in and Sumner applies it to them both! They roll out but Sumner holds onto Hawke’s arm. Donst comes in and Hawke retreats to the floor. He trips Donst from behind so Ryder can take control. The Fabulous Three take turns wearing him down until Donst gives Sweeney a jawbreaker and rolls under his clothesline. Gulak and Sumner both tag in. They take down both Hawke and Ryder. Donst Gator rolls Hawke. Sweeney breaks the cover. He gives Sumner the ‘68 Comeback Special. The other four are fighting on the floor as Sweeney hits Sumner with the 12 Large Elbow for the pin at 10:18. Team Stranglehold never stood a chance. Their wrestling is good but at this time their personalities were so bland. Ryder and Donst monopolized most of the opening of the match which wasn’t terribly interestin. By and large the crowd seemed apathetic, but they would make up for it in the Fabulous Three’s second round match. *

We cut to The F1RST Family of Arik Cannon and the North Star Express. Darin Corbin says that he and Cruz have tournament experience being in both Tag World Grand Prix and Young Lions Cup, even though they fell short. Cannon reminds them that he won both of those tournaments. None of them have ever been in a Trios tournament before. Cannon said he didn’t drive20 hours from Minnesota through sleet, snow, and with a bunch of other idiots on the road to lose. He feels that King of Trios is their time to shine. Corbin says that Cannon’s speech was very touching.

Cannon comes back with a Saito suplex and the Glimmering Warlock. Uno breaks the cover. Cruz crotches Stupefied in the corner. Corbin Finlay Rolls Uno. He gives Stupefied a back cracker while Cruz hits Uno with a super legdrop. Uno kicks out! Stupefied takes the Everlasting Gobstopper. Corbin calls for Cruz Control. Uno pulls Stupefied out of the way. He sends Corbin into Cannon. Generico dives onto both of them on the floor. This leaves Cruz to take Pac-Man Fever from the Super Smash Bros for the pin at 15:35. Many people call this the match of the weekend. Given the participants, it’s easy to see why. This was as hard hitting, action packed, frenetic, and fun as you would expect and then some. Give this a watch (or rewatch). ***¾

Los Ice Creams and Team Mexico are introduced. Los Ice Creams mystery partner will be randomly picked by Leonard F. Chikarason via ball tumbler. “Ice Man” King Parsons is the first name drawn, but he’s not here. Neither is Lance Steel. To everyone’s surprise, Glacier is the third name drawn AND is here! “Sandstorm” plays and “snow” falls as the fans lose their minds.

King of Trios 2008 First Round Match

Hijo gets the ropes to break Pantera’s armbars. He armwhips Pantera overhead. Pantera blocks a second attempt and armdrags Hijo. He stops Hijo and dropkicks him. He armdrags Glacier and holds onto him. Incognito cartwheels over Glacier and armdrags him back down. Dorado takes over the wristlock. Glacier shoves him down and tags in Jr. He backs Dorado to the corner and slaps him in the face. Dorado slides through his legs and uses the ropes for an armdrag. He blocks Jr.’s offense. He flips onto his shoulders and takes him down with a satellite headscissors. He then headscissors Jr. into a schoolboy for two. Dorado enzuigiri’s him to the floor. Hijo uses his posterior to cut off Dorado’s suicide dive attempt. Los Ice Creams and Glacier cut the ring in half, taking turns wearing Dorado down. Dorado ducks Glacier’s double chop. Glacier holds Dorado in his arms. Pantera kicks out Glacier’s legs so Dorado can get a near fall. Jr. cuts Dorado off so he can’t tag out. He takes the Ice Cream Sandwich for two. Pantera makes the save and cartwheels Hijo into an armdrag, and then an armbar. Glacier palm strikes Pantera’s ear and sweeps out his leg. Hijo connects with El Asesino on Dorado. Los Ice Creams have Glacier retrieve their bag of sprinkles and he dumps them on the canvas! All three of them slam Dorado onto the sprinkles! Dorado and Incognito both break up the pin. Pantera headstands into a dropkick on Jr. Incognito follows with a cannonball senton. Incognito and Pantera dropkick Hijo and Glacier to the floor and dive after them. Dorado Frankensteiner’s Jr. onto the sprinkles. He superkicks him and heads up top. The crowd is nervous, but Dorado hits the moonsault for the pin at 13:29. Glacier was an awesome surprise. Loved him pouring out the sprinkles. Any time someone from outside the CHIKARA environment comes in and plays into it, it never fails to make me smile. The Lucha team typically has slip-ups every match but they kept it together for the most part. Jr. having to scooch into place for the moonsault was slightly cringeworthy. Seriously though, GLACIER! **½

King of Trios 2008 Second Round Match
KUDO {DDT}, MIYAWAKI {KD} & SUSUMU vs. AkuA, Immortal White & Immortal Black

Team AZW (from Hawaii) is the third of four teams to get a bye into the second round. AkuA tosses all of his opposition away when he locks-up with them individually. The Immortals double wheelbarrow suplex SUSUMU and crotch MIYAWAKI on the top rope. They hit a Doomsday Ace Crusher. SUSUMU missile dropkicks them both. SUSUMU blocks AkuA’s slam with a Yoshi Tonic. AkuA recovers and hits a lariat for two. He takes offense from all three Team Japan members before eating a triple dropkick. SUSUMU dives onto the Immortals. MIYAWAKI drops AkuA with a reverse DDT and KUDO comes off the top with double knees for the pin at 9:20. Team AZW performed poorly, no two ways about it. Team Japan worked as hard as they could but with three lugs of wrestlers it was an uphill climb from the get go. ½*

King of Trios 2008 Second Round Match
Marshe Rockett {ST}, Acid Jaz {ST} & Willie Richardson {ST} vs. Icarus {F}, Gran Akuma {F} & Chuck Taylor {F}

Icarus blocks Jaz’s Shiranui. Taylor hits him with the Awful Waffle for the pin at 13:09. In one night Da Soul Touchaz became breakout stars. They entertained, they impressed, and they offered something unique. I would have never expected a team like this to make me believe they had a fighting chance against F.I.S.T. but I’d be lying if I said they didn’t. There’s a reason they were brought back multiple times and got a standing ovation from the crowd. F.I.S.T. gets credit too for being awesome foes and helping them look strong. ***¼

Demolition and the One Man Gang are in the back. Smash says CHIKARA invited them to Philadelphia for one reason; to win the King of Trios. Yes, we know. They’re tired of fighting the One Man Gang so they are going to team up with him instead. Gang says they’re going to walk out victorious one way or another. Ax says they were nice enough guys to reserve 14 ambulances for their victims. Last time they were in Philadelphia they were beating up on the Gang and Big Boss Man. They know he’s a good fighter. Ax says the other teams better be insured, because they didn’t come to lose.

King of Trios 2008 Second Round Match
Demolition Ax, Demolition Smash & One Man Gang vs. Larry Sweeney {FT}, Mitch Ryder {FT} & Shayne Hawke {FT}

I got chills watching Team WWF’s entrance at home. I can only imagine how the fans in the arena felt. They are the fourth and final team to receive a Bye into the second round. One fan is dressed up as Akeem and did an amazing job of doing so. Sweeney challenges Gang to a strut off, knowing his past with dancing as Akeem. Gang actually grabs the fans Akeem hat to wear before participating in the strut off. Both guys strut to “Jive Soul Bro” which might be the best thing to ever happen in a CHIKARA ring. Smash and and Hawke end up starting out. Hawke’s wristlock does nothing. Smash slams him with authority. He chokes Hawke on the top rope. Hawke tries a crossbody. Smash catches him and tags in Ax. Team WWF clobbers him with forearms as he lay across the top rope. Ax back elbows Hawke and chokes him against the ropes. Gang splashes Hawke in the corner. He tosses Hawke out so Ryder would be forced to tag in. He shoves Ryder to the corner. He claims hair pulling. Gang shoulder blocks Ryder to the floor. Sweeney attacks Gang from behind. Gang clobbers him and tags in Ax. He delivers some strikes and a knee lift. He snapmares Sweeney into a chinlock. Smash gets two with a belly-to-back suplex. Sweeney rakes Smash’s eyes. Hawke, Sweeney, and Ryder triple team him in the corner and make very quick tags. This is their best chance to get an advantage. Smash however is able to double clothesline Sweeney and Hawke. Team WWF whips the Fabulous Three together. Demolition clothesline Sweeney and Hawke to the floor. While Bryce is distracted by them, Ryder punches Gang with brass knuckles to get the win at 10:06. Who cares about the wrestling? The nostalgia trip and watching the WWF guys wreck the Fabulous Three made this a great time. The strut off is one of the all time great CHIKARA moments. *

King of Trios 2008 Second Round Match
Lince Dorado, El Pantera & Incognito vs. El Generico, Player Uno {SSB} & Stupefied {SSB}

Stupefied and Incognito showboat to start. Incognito does damage to Stupefied’s back and legs on the mat. He then controls Stupefied by the arm and sends him to the corner. Stupefied headscissors his way out of a courting hold. Incognito kicks out of a cascading Yoshi Tonic. After a handshake, they tag out to Generico and Pantera. After looking for control, Pantera baits Generico into a dragonscrew leg whip. He punts the back of Generico’s head from a headstand position in the corner and sends him to the floor with a headscissors. In comes Dorado and Uno. Uno controls Dorado with an armbar. Dorado maneuvers up Uno’s shoulders and down with an armdrag. Uno gets two with a tornado clutch. Dorado victory rolls Uno for two. Uno gets a few more nearfalls before going back to his feet. Dorado jumps right up after taking a shoulder block. Uno trips him into a slingshot elbow drop from Stupefied. Team IWS take turns attacking Dorado, but Dorado escapes relatively quickly by giving Generico an enzuigiri and tagging in Incognito. He missile dropkicks Generico and hits the Tiger Driver for two. Pantera slams him, and Incognito slingshots in with a senton for two. Generico gives him a belly-to-back suplex. Uno sends all of Team Mexico to the floor. He suicide dives onto Pantera. Stupefied tope con hilo’s onto Dorado. Generico springboard moonsaults onto Incognito. Back in the ring, Pantera assists Dorado with a headscissors to Generico. Incognito crossbody’s onto Stupefied. Pantera breaks the pin. Uno tries a Frankensteiner on Pantera. He turns it into a Styles Clash. Generico makes the save. He gives Pantera a Blue Thunder Bomb for two. Stupefied German suplexes Incognito. Dorado dropkicks Stupefied and hits him with a 619. He tries a slingshot maneuver but Uno catches him. He eats a double enzuigiri but kicks out. The IWS team delivers a three post massacre but Dorado still manages to kick out. Dorado takes a running knee strike/tiger feint kick combo. Generico then yakuza kicks him and follows with a brainbuster. Incognito and Pantera jump in to save him. Pantera neck-tie headscissors Generico off the top rope. Incognito follows with a twisting splash. Uno stops the pin. Pantera rids of Uno with a backbreaker. Generico hits a tornado DDT on Pantera. Dorado avoids Generico’s brainbuster and spikes him on a reverse Frankensteiner. Stupefied runs across their backs to break the pin. He hits Incognito with a running knee and goes up top. Incognito follows and brings him down with a Guerrero Special (flipping fallaway slam) for the pin at 21:37. This would have been better as a more compact package but the latter half was really exciting. Again, there was a bit of hesitancy and maybe mild sloppiness from the Lucha team, but the IWS team was on point and looked pretty spectacular. An exciting, fun way to end the show, but losing five minutes would have helped avoid some needless parity wrestling in the beginning. ***½
