Aniversario Orange

Emmaus, PA – 5.21.2005

Commentary is provided by Eddie Kingston, Larry Sweeney, Shun the Kabuki Kid, and Bryce Remsburg.

The DVD kicks off with a music video recapping some highlights of the past few years of CHIKARA. You can watch that video here.

We see The Dark Breed backstage with Bryce Remsburg duct taped to a wall in his undies. He is distressed as Hallowicked performs some strange ritual on him. Mantis says The Dark Breed operate as a team and will watch each others back in their respective singles matches tonight. The camera zooms in on a tiki necklace Bryce is wearing to end the segment.

Equinox vs. Hallowicked {DB}

UltraMantis Black brings a box of incense with him as he accompanies Hallowicked. Hallowicked and Equinox exchange holds on the mat. Hallowicked tosses Equinox to the floor. Equinox comes back in and knocks Hallowicked down with a shoulder block. Equinox hits a pop-up dropkick and sends Hallowicked to the floor with a headscissors. Equinox tope’s into an armdrag. Mantis grabs Equinox’s leg as he tries to enter the ring, allowing Hallowicked to hit him with a somersault legdrop to the head. Equinox small packages him for two. Hallowicked stands on Equinox’s chest, then flips into a senton. Hallowicked suplexes Equinox for two. Equinox hits a standing shooting star press after a flying burrito. Mantis distracts Equinox on the apron, allowing Hallowicked to O’Conner Roll Equinox for the pin at 6:08. Really great match between these two to open the show. Equinox came off really polished with Hallowicked who of course continues to be one of the more underutilized guys during this time. In my eyes, this was a perfect match to kick off the show. **1/2

Private Eye vs. Rorschach {SNS}

Rorschach chops Eye down and snatches his magnifying glass. Eye hip tosses Rorschach and gives him a sidewalk slam. He clotheslines Rorschach to the floor. Eye chases him around the floor. Rorschach catches him in the ring a divorce court arm breaker. Rorschach drops him with a sidewalk slam across the knee. He misses a slingshot elbow and Eye rolls him up for two. Rorschach brings Eye down into a Fujiwara armbar. Rorschach comes down with a double axe handle to the arm. Eye rolls out of the way to avoid a top rople splash. Eye hits the Eye Drop. He powerbombs Rorschach for two. Rorschach hits a Manhattan Drop and a leg lariat. Rorschach applies the Rorschach Lock to pick up the win at 10:29. Eye looked his best here, but this was just your run of the mill back and forth bout. *1/2

Out to the ring comes Icarus, to his new theme “Blue Monday” by Orgy (which he and Team F.I.S.T. still use to this day). Icarus says he was in CHIKARA since day one and has been under appreciated since. He says he wasn’t in either Young Lions Cup tournament, nor does he think Leonard F. Chikarason knows his name. He believes he and Akuma have received no respect from anyone since they’ve been in CHIKARA. Icarus says last night was his breaking point when Shane Storm pinned him by luck in a tag match. While Icarus goes on about respect, Chris Hero comes out. Hero says he’s recognized that Icarus leaves everything he has in the ring each night he wrestles and is rewarded with no respect. Hero says he, Claudio, and Cannon weren’t getting the respect they deserved so they took it. He says Icarus doesn’t need the people’s support. Icarus shakes Hero’s hand before they both leave.

We then cut backstage to Matt Turner. He says he knows that Shane Hagadorn cheats in his matches and he is just as likely to do whatever it takes to win.

Ring of Honor Student Round Robin Tournament
Matt Turner {ROH} vs. Shane Hagadorn {ROH}

Turner small packages Hagadorn to evade a fisherman’s suplex. They exchange wristlocks, and Turner armdrags Hagadorn while clutching his wrist. Hagadorn knocks him down with a shoulder block for two. Turner does the same. Hagadorn catches Turner with a dropkick for two. Hagadorn snapmares Turner and misses a dropkick. Turner sunset flips Hagadorn for two. Hagadorn suplexes him. He slingshots in and kicks Turner in the head for two. Hagadorn hits a twisting neckbreaker for two. Turner backslides him for two. Hagadorn chokes Turner in the corner and follows up with a basement single leg dropkick for two. Turner knee strikes Hagadorn in the corner and follows with a running knee strike. He hits a second for two. Turner kicks Hagadorn’s arm away and dropkicks him in the shoulder. Turner hits a nice Northern Lights suplex for two. Turner applies a Fujiwara armbar. Hagadorn grabs the ropes to escape. Hagadorn sunset flips Turner off the top rope and holds his tights to pick up the win at 9:18. It’s a real shame Turner didn’t pick up the win as Hagadorn is so bland and annoying by comparison. Sub-par match with a poor result. *

Dr. Cheung vs. Andy Sumner {CZW}

Sumner takes Cheung down and knees him in the shoulder multiple times. Sumner suplexes Cheung into a cross armbreaker which Cheung breaks via the ropes. Cheung applies a full nelson. Sumner frees himself but gets taken down in an armbrar. Cheung slams Sumner and puts on a latex glove. He applies the Mandible Claw. Sumner escapes. Cheung overhand chops Sumner in the corner before suplexing him for a two count. Cheung insists on showing Sumner how to run the ropes. Sumner obliges, but drops down to trip Cheung as he comes off. Sumner puts Cheung in an abdominal hold. Cheung headbutts Sumner to escape. Sumner blocks an Irish whip, so Cheung pokes him in the eyes. Sumner explodes out of the corner with a spear. Cheung picks up Sumner and drops him with the Doctor Bomb for the pin at 6:22. While this was good, this was a strange pairing for Sumner’s debut. Things seemed a bit disjointed and the match never came together completely. *1/4

Jolly Roger {KPG} & Lance Steel {KPG} vs. Skayde & Kanjyouru Matsuyama {TX}

Skayde takes Steel down into a grapevine. Steel armdrags him down. Skayde armdrags him into a body stretch. Steel reverses into a grapevine stretch. Skayde tries a Skayde schoolboy and gets two. He armdrags Steel into the corner. Roger and Matsuyama tag in. Matsuyama wrist clutches Roger into a pin for two. Matsuyama armdrags him and nips up. Matsuyama applies a key lock stretch. Matsuyama armdrags Roger and nips up once more. Skayde and Steel tag back in. Skayde elbow drops Steel as Steel drops down. Skayde bounces off the ropes into a headscissors and then sends Roger to the floor with a risorte. Matsuyama and Roger quicken the pace, looking for a flash pin. Matsuyama takes Roger down with a huracanrana, and Roger pops back up with a clothesline for two. Matsuyama rolls Steel into a hammerlock. Steel rolls out and tags in Roger. Roger hits a swinging neckbreaker before applying an Achilles tendon hold. Steel and Roger double team Matsuyama. Skayde comes in and attacks Steel from behind. Roger and Steel joust Skayde in the corner. Steel puts him in the Boston Crab, but Matsuyama breaks the hold. Roger drops him with a fisherman’s buster for two. Steel puts Matsuyama in a modified figure seven. Steel and Roger hit a tandem back drop. Skayde comes in and slams Steel and Roger face first into the mat. Skayde and Matsuyama hit basement dropkicks on both of them. Skayde and Steel fight on the floor. Matsuyama sends Roger to the floor with a missile dropkick. Matsuyama suicide dives onto Roger. Steel rolls Skayde into a Cross Crab. Skayde grabs the ropes. Skayde slams Steel and rolls him into the Skayde schoolboy for the pin at 10:54. This was a chaotic mess. It started off well but really just turned into a mess with too many tags. There were glimpses of good stuff to save this, but it really broke down in the end. **

The ring announcer reminds us that due to a stipulation in a tag match from last night between Knight Eye for the Pirate Guy and Sweet N’ Sour International, Larry Sweeney and The ShareCropper must appear in diapers. With that, out comes Larry Sweeney in a t-shirt and sweat pants with a fanny pack. Sweeney says that ShareCropper isn’t here so he does not have to appear in diapers. Leonard F. Chikarason comes out and says Sweeney signed a contract saying that Sweet N’ Sour International would appear in diapers, which doesn’t necessarily mean ShareCropper. Chikarason says if Sweeney doesn’t oblige, he won’t be wrestling for CHIKARA any longer. Sweeney leaves in a huff with a sad look on his face. We then cut to 10 minutes later, where Sweeney is coming into the building with Crossbones, Rorschach, and Mano Metalico all in diapers. Sweeney has a towel around his waist and is very upset. Sweeney looks at his group in disgust. Sweeney says that they’re in this diapers because the group didn’t listen to him. Sweeney says if they had been on the winning streak he wanted they wouldn’t be in this predicament. He then confronts them on their personal issues, such as Crossbones not putting dishes away. Crossbones says he doesn’t feel too bad because he can relieve his bowel distress during a match if he wanted to. Crossbones removes Sweeney’s towel to reveal him in a diaper. Sweeney immediately fires all three of his men and quits. He says Sweet N’ Sour International is officially done and bails through the back door.

Icarus {F} vs. Nebula

Icarus jumps Nebula at the bell. Icarus suplexes Nebula into a two count. Nebula armdrags Icarus down. Icarus swipes away a dropkick but gets armdragged once again. Icarus sends Nebula to the apron. Nebula slingshots in with an armdrag. He hits two quebradora’s. Nebula takes Icarus down and drops a knee on his leg. Nebula snaps Icarus’ neck on the top rope. Nebula transitions from a fireman’s carry into a sidewalk slam. Icarus swings out of a fireman’s carry into a headscissors takedown. Icarus comes off the top with a twisting body press to the floor. In the ring, Icarus springboards into a huracanrana for two. Icarus clotheslines Nebula in the corner. Nebula flies out of the corner with a crossbody. Nebula steps directly on Icarus’ junk which must suck. Nebula applies a weak ankle lock which Icarus breaks with the ropes. Icarus hits a clothesline and a DDT for the pin at 6:47. Nothing was bad, but man was this uninteresting. The crowd did nothing this whole match. I guess it’s good Icarus got a win over an international talent, but it’s going to take more than a match like this to get him over. *

Shane Storm is in a truck. He says last night should have been great after beating Team F.I.S.T., but they put his partner Mister ZERO out of action indefinitely. Storm says he’s focused on tonight where he faces UltraMantis Black. Storm reminds us that he defeated Mantis’ partner Hallowicked in his second match ever in CHIKARA, and has been teaming with Mantis’ former partner ZERO who has told him all of Mantis’ secrets. He promises victory tonight.

Shane Storm {MW} vs. UltraMantis Black {DB}

Hallowicked accompanies Mantis to the ring. Mantis rolls up Storm for two. Storm takes Mantis over with a quesadora and a back body drop. He tries to monkey flip Mantis out of the corner, but Mantis hangs him on the ropes and chops him in the chest. Storm comes back with an alita. Mantis retreats to the floor. Storm goes for a suicide dive, but Hallowicked catches him with a yakuza kick as he flies out. Mantis drops Storm with a neckbreaker for two. Storm sunset flips Mantis for two. Mantis flies at Storm with a clothesline for two. Mantis knee strikes Storm in the corner. Storm moves out of the way of a second knee strike, causing Mantis to hit the floor. Storm flies off the apron with a somersault senton. Storm and Mantis engage in a hard forearm exchange. Storm looks for the Air Raid Crash on the floor, but Mantis instead drops Storm with a Death Valley Driver on the apron! Mantis only gets a two count. Storm reverses a tornado DDT with a German suplex. He drops a Muta elbow for two. Storm hits a second rope elbow drop for two. Storm kicks out Mantis’ legs and hits him with That Japanese Move. Hallowicked gets on the apron to distract the referee. Mantis tries an O’Conner Roll, but Storm moves so that Mantis and Hallowicked collide. Storm hits a second That Japanese Move for the pin at 9:49. That was a refreshing change from everything else on the card so far. This actually felt like the guys were fighting for pride and the win felt important for Storm. The exchange on the floor was excellent and Kingston’s reaction on commentary made it much more fun. **3/4

Mike Quackenbush, Reckless Youth, & Jigsaw vs. Chris Hero {KOW}, Claudio Castagnoli {KOW}, & Arik Cannon {KOW}

Cannon comes out in Jigsaw’s mask that he took last night. Quackenbush and Hero start off. Like last night, Hero tags in Claudio before contact is made. Claudio shoves Quackenbush to the corner. Quackenbush cranks on a courting hold. Quackenbush takes him down in a body stretch. Claudio uses the ropes to escape. Cannon and Youth tag in. Youth and Cannon exchange holds. Youth goes for a cross armbreaker and Cannon gets the ropes to break. Jigsaw and Hero tag in. They target each others’ arms. Hero knees Jigsaw in the face to escape a courting hold. Jigsaw nips up into a double wrist clutch armdrag. Claudio tags in and picks Jigsaw’s ankle. He rolls through to throw Claudio down. Claudio illegally hits Jigsaw in the face as he goes to the ropes. Jigsaw trips Claudio and applies a Camel Clutch. Claudio escapes and hits an uppercut. Cannon tags in and immediately is taken down with an armdrag. Quackenbush tags in and takes Cannon down with a hiponesa. He gets sent to the apron but comes back in with a somersualt armdrag. Quackenbush gives him a Manhattan Drop and sweeps his leg before applying a surfboard. Youth sentons Cannon and then applies a Camel Clutch. Quackenbush kicks him right in the face. Hero tags in. He and Youth go back and forth at a lightning pace. Youth sends Hero to the floor with a toreador. The Kings strategize on the floor. Claudio and Jigsaw tag in. Claudio gets angry that Jigsaw is able to go hold for hold with him. Jigsaw pops off the ropes with an armdrag and cartwheels off Claudio into an armdrag. Claudio drops him head first in the corner and tags in Cannon who delivers the Total Anarchy. The Kings isolate Jigsaw from his partners, wearing him down in their corner. After a long beatdown, Jigsaw escapes a double clothesline and tags in Youth. Youth gives Hero an Asai mooonsault. He hits Claudio with a top rope knee strike to the neck. Hero hotshots Youth to cut him off. The Kings now trap Youth in their corner and target his neck and throat. Cannon argues with Bryce over the cadence of his count, allowing Youth to roll up Cannon for two. Claudio chokes Youth with his tie behind Bryce’s back. Quackenbush and Claudio explode in the corner while Hero kicks Youth in the groin. Youth continues to have his neck and throat targeted until he is able to take Hero and Claudio down with an armdrag and headscissors combo. He rolls to the floor which effectively tags in Jigsaw. He takes Claudio down with a headscissors. Quackenbush comes in and takes down all three Kings. Jigsaw gives Claudio a huracanrana. Youth drops Cannon with a Finlay Roll for two. Claudio gives Youth a spinebuster and a twisting neckbreaker for two. Jigsaw kicks Claudio. Jigsaw blocks a Burning Hammer and drops Claudio with a DDT. Hero breaks the pin and throws Jigsaw to the floor. Youth gives Hero a super Manhattan Drop. Quackenbush palm strikes him. Youth puts Hero in the Kondo Clutch. Cannon breaks it with the Glimmering Warlock. Quackenbush drops Hero with a reverse brainbuster and Cannon breaks the pin. Jigsaw flies into Claudio’s arms. Claudio and Cannon hit their combination Glimmering Warlock/Ricola Bomb. Hero puts Jigsaw in the Hero’s Welcome. Jigsaw is about to pass out until Quackenbush and Youth make the save. Quackenbush and Youth dive onto Hero and Claudio on the floor with stereo suicide dives. Cannon rips away at Jigsaw’s mask like he did last night. He rips a hole in it, causing Jigsaw to unload with forearms. Jigsaw ducks the Glimmering Warlock and drops Cannon with the Jig N’ Tonic for the pin at 32:13. What an unbelievable tag team match. The story was awesome, the action was hot and heavy from start to finish, and the once sleepy crowd was going out of their minds by the finish. These six coming together ensured an awesome bout, but even I was impressed with the match they put on. Leave it to these guys to save yet another show. ****1/4

Hero is almost in tears as he, Claudio, and Cannon go to the back. Quackenbush thanks Youth and Jigsaw for taking out the Kings of Wrestling. He then thanks the fans for their support, citing that tonight is CHIKARA’s final night in Emmaus. Quackenbush says his and Hero’s issue ends tomorrow night in Pittston.
